The Film
The most iconic monster in all of mythology finally gets her own film.
Apollo Fordman's Medusa is a 1h40min long animated epic.
I reject the superhero-like, modern blockbuster versions of the ancient mythic world.
I reject the corporate demythologizing of mythology.
There are gods in my film. Monsters. Magic. Myth.
The world of Medusa is as colorful as possible, just as the ancient Mediterranean was.
I structured the film as a story of multiple perspectives that span generations.
The main plot line centers on a ten-day countdown: Perseus must claim Medusa’s head to save his mother from Polydectes.
Meanwhile, Medusa unravels the mystery of a curse that is rapidly escalating out of control.
They exist in a world governed by ancient realities like miasma (bloodline pollution) and moira (divine fate).
These, and many more concepts are essential ancient realities that drive all Greek myths.
They are completely ignored by every single modern adaptation.
I wanted to bring the foreign, alien reality of ancient myth to a movie.
The inspiration for this film is real ancient history and authentic storytelling by the old masters.
Shout out to Aristotle, Sophocles, Aeschylus, Ovid, Hesiod and Euripides.

The Director
Apollo Fordman
My father left Africa on a Greek merchant ship.
He immersed himself completely in Greek culture.
He passed the stories and culture of Greece down to me.
My Medusa film is the culmination of a lifelong fascination with the ancient Mediterranean and an obsession with computer animation.
The first, and most important thing I did was lock myself in the library and study.
I had to learn the unbreakable rules of authentic mythic storytelling before I could redefine what an authentic Greek film is and can be.
Every single frame is meticulously hand crafted, rendered with physically based path tracing light simulations using blender.
I committed to do what was seen as impossible prior to Medusa: finish a CG feature film to a standard that tears down the walls and smashes the ceilings that have held independent artists back until now.
It has taken me almost a decade of 12h workdays without a single day off, but it will all have been worth it when Medusa releases soon.
My film is 100% human made. There are no AI generated visuals, sounds, script or performances.

The Music
Zero Synthesizers. Zero Violins. Zero Western Music Theory.
In every adaptation of Greek myth or history in existence, they scrub the statues of their vibrant polychrome paint.
Instead of vibrant, lifelike, colourful historical painted marble statues, we get plain white marble statues.
They have done this "desaturation" for almost a century.
Music and film scores have also tragically fallen victim to this bleaching.
In a cinematic world-first, the score of Medusa is composed exclusively with ancient Greek and Roman instruments.
Based on years of academic research into frescoes and marble reliefs, I commissioned, learned, and performed all ~35 known instruments of ancient Greece and Rome.
I worked with the worlds best musical archeologists to reconstruct these instruments, Many of which, only existed as a rudimentary written description on old papyrus.
These were all brought back to life with real wood, bone and bronze.
So yes, in Medusa, you will hear every single known ancient Greco-Roman instrument - almost 1500 years of historical music.
The sounds that you will hear are completely rooted in ancient music theory.
This means no chord progressions or harmony, only ancient heterophony, monophony, Greek modal and microtonal scales.
No one has dared to strip a score back to sonic landscape built entirely from gut strings, bronze gongs, buzzing reeds and resonant regional woods.
Simply, nothing like this exists in the entire history of cinema.
To accompany the score, I wrote 11 original songs in ancient language (primarily the attic dialect).
These songs are performed by Byzantine masters and Greek opera singers.
